The State Historical Library is selling a book about Iowa’s 57 Civil War Medal of Honor recipients. Sen. Dennis Black, D-Lynnville, is the author of “Profiles of Valor: Iowa’s Medal of Honor Recipients of the Civil War.” He has spoken several times on the Iowa Senate floor about his book, and has pointed out that all proceeds will benefit the State Historical Society of Iowa.

In case you missed it, Mitt Romney said in his acceptance speech last week that “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family.” There is something wrong when, in 2012, a major party candidate for president uses global warming and the environment as a quip — especially when part of the state of Louisiana was under water from Hurricane Isaac, which brought huge storm surges and record rains.

Department of Workforce Development recently released a study showing that the start of a school year is marked with high hopes, expectations and sometimes a bit of trepidation.
