Veterinary diagnostic lab benefits Iowa livestock producers
The veterinary diagnostic laboratory at Iowa State University provides vital services to the state’s livestock producers, including diagnosing diseases and developing vaccines.
By reducing animal mortality through better diagnosis and treatment, the lab has a multi-million dollar impact on the state’s economy. For example, the lab developed a vaccine for circovirus, which has had an estimated $109 million annual impact on the swine industry in the state since it was introduced.
The lab is also a vital part of the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, helping to maintain its status as a top institution for veterinary medicine in the nation and a training ground for future veterinarians.
Livestock producers are a huge part of Iowa’s economy. By supporting the ISU’s veterinary diagnostic lab, the Legislature is helping Iowa livestock producers and contributing to the strong economic impact they have in local communities all across our state.
