In 2005, Clear Creek Amana Middle School Principal Brad Fox had concerns about the wellbeing of students in his school. He contacted an investigator in the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office named Kevin Kinney.

Long story short: Because Fox “saw something and said something,” Kinney and other law enforcement officers rescued a 13-year-old girl and shut down a sex trafficking ring with connections in Cosgrove, Williamsburg, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Chicago and St. Paul.

Kinney has since become a Democratic member of the Iowa Senate.

This Iowa Network Against Human Trafficking gave both Fox and Kinney an “Outstanding Service Award” on January 9 at the Statehouse. At the same event, the Governor signed a proclamation declaring January to be Iowa’s first-ever “Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month.”
