Victims of violent crime, as well as the friends and family of homicide victims, suffer physical, emotional and financial hardship. Medical costs, counseling, funeral expenses and lost wages add to the trauma of the crime itself. Victims and survivors can be hit with additional costs if a defendant gets a new trial or a resentencing hearing, or when a cold case is solved and a defendant is finally charged.
The Iowa Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of three northwest Iowa counties in the Raccoon River watershed in a lawsuit brought by Des Moines Water Works. This is the outcome many Iowa farmers were hoping for in this case. They told me it would give them the opportunity to step up and take action to improve our waterways.
