Making improvements to Medicaid Managed Care

Comments Off on Making improvements to Medicaid Managed Care

Last weekend, I got three e-mails from families in my district. They are desperate to get better health care for family members. I brought up their cases in a meeting this week with Iowa Department of Human Services officials, but fighting for those three families won’t solve all the problems created by Iowa’s shattered safety net.

If someone you love has a serious, long-term medical problem, chances are they will depend on Medicaid for their care. We are all just an accident or serious illness away from that situation.

That’s why I am working with Senator Liz Mathis of Marion on meaningful Medicaid reform legislation. Our goal is to improve services so people can stay independent and in their own homes as long as possible. That’s best for Iowa families, and it is much less costly than nursing homes.

The legislation we wrote this year, SF 368, did not survive the first legislative funnel. However, we will offer these ideas as amendments to other bills and to the Health & Human Services Budget bill.

We must fix the Medicaid mess. Iowa is paying more for less, and that hurts Iowa families and communities.
