The second week of the legislative session seemed to center around Senate File 94 — the voucher bill. It passed a subcommittee last week, and then moved through the Education and Appropriations committees this week. I appreciate hearing from so many of you and have attempted to answer your emails. I also listened to the subcommittee last week and the House public forum on Tuesday night.
I wish this bill wasn’t on a fast track because there are so many questions about the state’s ability to take on such a large appropriation, at the same time that tax cuts and credits will be phased in this year. The state is also funding mental health, a program that had been funded through local property taxes.
Another problem with moving so quickly on the vouchers bill is the timing of implementation. This bill takes effect immediately. That means funding for private school vouchers will be guaranteed for the coming year, even before we’ve set funding levels for our public schools. Under that scenario, this bill will definitely divert dollars away from public schools.
I am learning the culture of the Senate and appreciate the opportunity to serve the people in Senate District 49. Please continue to contact me about issues that are important to you.
Back at home, I’ll be attending a Townhall meeting with Reps. Ken Croken and Monica Kurth at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 21 at the Eastern Avenue Library in Davenport. Hope to see you there!
